Neath Port Talbot College’s year 9 taster sessions
Wednesday afternoon
sessions 1:00-3:00
Travel and Tourism
Pupils will be introduced to a day
in the life of working cabin crew. They learn about customer skills, rules
and regulation applicable to the industry and carry out the welcome speech
on board the air craft using the life vests. Each pupil will be
photographed during the demonstration and will have a certificate
confirming that they have completed the task.

Public Services
Problem solving exercises will be
carried out which will involve Teamwork, Leadership and Communication - all
of which are required in the Public Services. One of the exercises will be
a team building activity where pupils will work in teams of four to six and
each team will have to undertake a mission which will have a brief, a
practical task and a debrief at the end to see:
whether you met
your targets?
whether you made a
profit?
what your balance was at the end?
which team was the overall winner?
out of 10, how successful you would rate your
team’s efforts?
how could you apply this is a real work
situation.

Hospitality and Catering
A practical session in the
production kitchen to cook chicken chasseur with rice. The pupils will have
the opportunity to cut for sauté a chicken and make the chasseur sauce with
rice. Pupils should wear sensible shoes and be prepared to wear an apron
and wash up. They will be able to take home their chicken dish.

Health and Social Care
This session will focus on careers
in the Health and Social Care industry by providing an insight into the opportunities
available and some of the considerations which need to be thought of prior to
embarking on such a career. There
will also be a creative craft activity designed to cater for the needs of a
range of individuals including early years, special needs and the elderly.

Hairdressing and Beauty
Therapy
Belle or Bill of the Ball
 
Pupils will undertake a project
that will encompass a range of basic hairdressing and beauty skills,
including:
Ø
Safe use of
heated hair equipment;
Ø
Simple ‘up
do’ hair styles;
Ø
Professional
Makeup Application;
Ø
Male
grooming techniques; and
Ø
Nail
Painting.
Using these skills, aided by
current students, pupils working in pairs will prepare themselves for the
End of School Prom.
Both male and female pupils can
take part.
All COSHH and PPE regulations will
be under-taken during the session.
A range of before and after photos
will be produced so pupils have evidence of the session.
Simple instruction booklets will
allow the pupils to practice the skills at home.

Retail and Enterprise
The pupils will research ideas
based around a new Pizza restaurant in teams. They will look at setting up
the restaurant, the menu, designing, marketing, promoting and setting up
this business. They will present their ideas to the others at the end of
the session.

BUILD
A COMPUTER
Ever wondered how a PC actually works?
Ever taken a peek inside a PC and marveled at
the complexity of the components?
Do those strange words and numbers on
advertising literature baffle you?
If you answered YES!
to just one of the above, we’ll take you through all of the above by
building a PC from scratch. You will be surprised how easy it is. Along the
way you will start to understand what the components are and we’ll explain
those strange words and numbers.

Sport and Recreation
Sport will be offering Practical
Sport in the Indoor Arena at LLandarcy Campus – this will include Skills
Sessions/Small sided games and Coaching from our current National Diploma
students.

Music Technology
The
workshops are suitable for students interested in computer music and they
will learn about audio and midi recording.

Plastering
Students will become familiar with
the tools and materials used in the application of coverings and finishes
to various surfaces.
Students will also develop
practical skills in the preparation of these surfaces prior to applying
decorative coatings/ plaster finishes.
All learners will practise these
skills in a safe manner and actively increase their knowledge and
understanding of risks and hazards associated with plastering.
It is the intention that students
will engage in hands on practical tasks that will stimulate their interest
in the vocational area and encourage further progression.

Friday morning sessions
9:30-11:30
Horticulture
Planting containers for winter interest.
Pupils will have the opportunity
to participate in planting a container for winter interest.
Assisted by tutors from the
department, learners will be involved in:
- selecting suitable subjects
for inclusion;
- incorporating suitable
growing mediums;
- identify colour combinations
that are suitable;
- providing suitable aftercare;
and
- recognising health and safety
consideration in connection with these tasks.
Learners should come suitably
dressed for the task.
Handouts connected with the task
and on career paths in horticulture will be provided.

Dance
The dance workshops will explore
contemporary and street jazz techniques and will also focus on
choreography.

Painting and Decorating
Students will become familiar with
the tools and materials used in the application of coverings and finishes
